Since 1885, the island's fire calls have been answered by volunteers.

The Tisbury Fire Department is an all-volunteer company serving Vineyard Haven and the Town of Tisbury. When the call comes, the people who answer are your neighbors.

The Department

An island institution, on call for the town.

For generations, Tisbury has been protected by residents who train, respond, and stand ready without pay. The work is quiet until it is not, and then it is everything.

The department operates from the station at 215 Spring Street in Vineyard Haven, covering the town's homes, harbor, and businesses. It has been staffed by volunteers since 1885, which makes it one of the oldest continuous institutions on this part of the island.

Fire Chief Patrick B. Rolston and Deputy Chief Marques C. Rivers lead a company built on a simple idea: neighbors looking out for neighbors.

Service to the Town

Fire and rescue, and the quiet work in between.

Everything the department does comes back to one job: keeping the people of Tisbury safe, on their worst day and on every ordinary one.

One

Fire response

When the tone drops, volunteers leave work and home to answer fire calls across Tisbury and Vineyard Haven, day or night.

Two

Rescue

Fire and rescue service for the town, its harbor, and everyone who passes through on the way to the island.

Three

Prevention and permits

Fire code questions, burn permits, open-burning guidance, and pre-inspection checklists for residents and builders.

Ways the island counts on us

Four things this town has never had to wonder about.

Plotted like soundings on the harbor chart, held steady by the same volunteers since 1885.

Fire

Structure and brush fires, answered by trained volunteers who know these roads.

Rescue

Help on the worst day, from people who live down the same street you do.
